Having survived 75 years with not too dramatic a face lift since its humble start as a ragtag collection of 18 tailgaters selling fruits and veggies, The Farmer’s Market on Fairfax is turning around and giving us a present for its birthday this week with Tuesday’s Taste of Farmer’s Market.
The fun technically begins today and rages through Sunday with various performances and events, but it’s tomorrow evening’s festivities that have us counting down the hours and sharpening our forks.
A $20 ticket buys access to a smattering of samples from almost all of The Farmer’s Market’s 36 food merchants from 5PM to 9PM tomorrow. That gives you a whole four hours to wildly cram as many Japanese, Mexican, Thai, Brazilian, Greek, Cajun, Korean, U.S., and other assorted street nibbles down the hatch as you possibly can at this Epcot Center of food stands. Eating around the Market’s “cheap eats” isn’t always that cheap, so $20 seems a score to add so many notches to our global foodie belts. Even better, an extra five bucks buys two drinks. Not bad for a 75 year-old, when we only expected a shiny nickel from a polyester pocket.
Some retail stalls plan to offer specials with 1934-style pricing to reflect The Market’s early days or pricing that reflects the three-quarter century mark, and there will be a signing of L.A.’s Original Farmer’s Market History Book and L.A.’s Original Farmer’s Market Cookbook from 6-8PM.
We foresee big, and possibly tipsy, crowds coming together to honor L.A.’s septuagenarian street eats hub as we remind ourselves of its appetizing bounty and great gifts this Tuesday night.
