Fall Preview: Where and What to Eat


What's new this fall? Thomas Keller will open Bouchon in Beverly Hills, but there are even more restaurants to be excited about. Umami will add two locations to keep us in burgers from Santa Monica to Los Feliz, Vermont's owners are constructing an eco-lounge and restaurant called Rockwell, Blue Plate is transporting an East Coast shellfish shanty, BP Oysterette, to our seaside, and Bowery owner George Abou-Daoud is adding Mercantile and District with Kris Morningstar menus to Hollywood. Name of Restaurant: BP Oysterette
Address: 1355 Ocean Ave. Santa Monica, CA 90401
Concept: Shellfish shack gets wind-swept from Nantucket with a touch of imagination by Chef Violet Robles and the Blue Plate team.
Why We're Excited: Plans to tear a hole in over-hyped tourist gill nets like The Lobster by serving oodles of black mussels, oysters, steamers, lobster rolls, cobblers, a blackened Mahi-Mahi sandwich, and a shot of fun.
Anticipated Open Date: September 3rd

Name of Restaurant: Marche
Address: 13355 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
Concept: Constantly changing French-Cali menu focused on restaurant-raised and small farm-supplied meat and produce.
Why We're Excited: Palate Food + Wine's Chef Gary Menes earned raves through the year in Glendale, now he has his own showcase under Chef Andre Guerrero that promises affordable small plates.
Anticipated Open Date: September 3rd

Name of Restaurant: Umami #2
Address: 4655 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90027
Concept: Umami will greatly expand the menu as they affirm their grip on L.A. with this second outpost of their sleeper hit burger joint.
Why We're excited: Besides a new spread of umami-pleasing dishes, the tiny attached Japanese bar The Salaryman designed by Cobras and Matadors Steve Arroyo, which Squid Ink promises will have oysters and a Japanese beer list.
Anticipated Opening Date: 1st week of September

Name of Restaurant: Eva
Address: 7458 Beverly Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90036
Concept: Chef-driven platform by former Patina chef Mark Gold will highlight specialty cuts of meats, farmer's market finds, and a varied wine list on a very flexible menu.
Why We're Excited: We feel the pronounced passion for produce on Gold's Twitter page, and love the idea of his impromptu dinner parties, where he'll cook what fascinates him every Sunday, as he shared with Food GPS. Anticipated Open Date: September 8th

Name of Restaurant: La Bottega Marino
Address: 9669 Santa Monica Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90210
Concept: The third and biggest outpost of the Neapolitan pizza, pasta, and pollo picatta restaurant.
Why We're Excited: While the fame of owner Sal Marino's tomato garden has almost eclipsed his food's, we're dying to see what additions he makes to the La Bottega menu to please Beverly Hills' silver spoons.

Address: Culver City
Concept: Custom-made sandwich and beer bar
Why We're Excited: Don't know a lot about it past some Twitterin', but we sure like good beer and sandwiches.
Anticipated Open Date: September 5th

Name of Restaurant: Local
Address: 1205 Abbot-Kinney Venice, CA 90291
Concept: Deli of charcuterie and cheese plates from the crew of adjacent OtherRoom.
Why We're Excited: The 3 a.m. closing time has Yo Venice stoked, but we're just hoping for an affordable bite after bar-hopping on Abbott-Kinney.
Anticipated Open Date: Mid-September

Name of Restaurant: Phillipe West Hollywood

West Hollywood, CA 90046
Concept: Phillipe Chow brings his self-ballyhooed upscale Chinese to our shores.
Why We're Excited: We 're hoping the controversy between Phillipe and the famous Mr. Chow comes to a head on our streets.
Anticipated Open Date: Late September

Name of Restaurant: Mercantile
Address: 6600 Sunset Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90028
Concept: Gourmet market, charcuterie, and sandwich shop from Bowery owner George Abou-Daoud.
Why We're Excited: Chef Kris Morningstar's braised beef-flank Sloppy Jo's and homemade ice cream.
Anticipated Open Date: Late September/Early October

Concept: Burger shack
Why We're Excited: Outdoor beer and wine patio on the Walk-of-Fame with a whole new list of burgers to scrutinize.
Anticipated Open Date: Late September/Early October [per Eater]

Name of Restaurant: BirdBath Bakery
Address: 8969 Santa Monica Blvd. West Hollywood, CA 90069
Concept: Hyper-green N.Y.C. bakery's first out-of-state venture from Maury Rubin.
Why We're Excited: City Bakery's departed Brentwood store was poorly located; this is a more central stop for the pretzel croissants we're missing.
Anticipated Open Date: October

Name of Restaurant: Gladstones
Address: 17300 Pacific Coast Highway Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
Concept: Hot nightlife kingpins SBE have taken over and are slowly making changes here, recently placing Chef Eric Ernest of Boa, Royale on Wilshire, and Citrine in the kitchen.
Why We're Excited: If SBE can do anything close to this old barnacle what they have done at Bazaar and XIV, the worlds of dining, west side nightlife, and Malibu traffic will be rocked.
Anticipated Open Date: Small changes are already afoot, but we expect big developments by the time you're saying 'trick or treat.'

Address: First St. and Hope St, Downtown
Concept: Supper club with American comfort food
Why We're Excited: We need a cool place to go when La Cita is in hipster overload.
Anticipated Opening Date: Mid-October


Name of Restaurant: Umami #3
Address: Fred Segal 500 Broadway Santa Monica, CA 90401
Concept: Adam Fleischman's super-cool burger joint transforms a stuffy Santa Monica department store, with "weird food" added to the usual menu and curbside pick-up, as per Squid Ink.
Why we're excited: Watching society mavens shout "Oh My Heavens!" when their fifth senses get tickled; Having an Umami burger so close to the beach and the mostly tasteless eateries of 3rd Street Promenade.
Anticipated Opening Date: November

Name of Restaurant: Bouchon
Address: 235 N. Canon Dr. Beverly Hills, CA 90210
Concept: Two floors of Thomas Keller's famous bistro in the biggest Bouchon yet.
Why We're Excited: We've long wanted our own Keller restaurant, and could always use another fine-dining experience that balances tradition in equal measure to sizzle. With all eyes on him, we can't imagine one of the country's most celebrated chefs would disappoint.
Anticipated Open Date: Mid to late-November

Concept: Deep Morningstar menu of slow-cooked entrees, plus a raw bar in an industrial space adjacent to owners' Mercantile.
Why We're Excited: Funky homemade breads and spreads like duck fat Yorkshire pudding with black truffle butter.
Anticipated Open Date: Mid to late-November

: Schmidt's Brauhaus
Address: 330 W. Olympic Blvd. Downtown Los Angeles, CA 90015
Concept: Giant German restaurant with its own beer garden and plenty of meat products.
Why We're Excited: A downtown beer garden before The Art Walk could help put a swing, or a swerve, in our step.
Anticipated Open Date: Sometime in November
