The Korean BBQ Festival and Cook-Off stretched across a parking lot roof at 6th and Vermont last Saturday, and an estimated 6,000 hungry bellies braved the heat in hopes of being served grilled galbee and bulgogi. While unorganized waits of 40 minutes for ten to fifteen dollar plates sparked a proliferation of negative comments on Yelp, the event had inspirational moments, full as it was of families that really pull together and take great pride in their food. We missed the choco pie eating contest, but arrived to see such VIP judges as Jonathan Gold, Evan Kleinman, and Russ Parsons choose all-you-can-eat restaurant Mu Dae Po's galbee as the winner of the Korean BBQ cook-off by a very slim margin. "Korean BBQ is kind of like sex," declared Gold, "even when it's bad, it's good." Check out our slideshow of the event.
