Pro speed-eater Joey "Jaws" Chestnut gobbled 231 gyoza in only ten minutes to claim the title at Little Tokyo's Gyoza Eating Festival last year. The San Jose native returned this past Saturday to stuff even more into his gullet as Nisei Week came to a close. Local challengers were approved by the International Federation of Competitive Eating and according to L.A. Metblog, took a sound drubbing from Chestnut, who last month demolished competitive eating superstar Kobayashi at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, the Wimbledon of the "sport." At the end of ten furious minutes of face-stuffing and a neighbor's cookie tossing, Chestnut fell about 50 gyoza short of his record, but ate 53 more than the second place competition. In addition to $1,000, Joey went home with a bellyful of honor, while Southern Californians are officially alerted they have a year to train and steal the title from NorCal.
