Sliders and Floats at XIV

Chef Michael Mina recently scrapped the mandatory eat-what-your-friends-ordered small plates edict introduced with XIV’s opening last fall. Done trying to beat ‘em, he’s joined the trend of taking kiddie menu entrees and dressing them up for adults, focusing on a smattering of burgers, sliders, finger foods, and alcoholic floats for his guests. XIV’s chef-in-command Steven Fretz prepared a media tasting of the new dishes yesterday evening and we wrangled our own seat on the Sunset Blvd. patio to try them. Sliders like the smoky-sweet Kobe burger were more successful than the overpowering and crunch-less veggie falafel slider formed from a recipe by Egyptian-born Mina’s Mom. The floats consistently hit the sweet spot and were both fun and powerful, though sporadically paced. We have pics of both the sliders and floats in our slide-show, check it out.
