Michael Mina is coming to cook at XIV next Tuesday and he’s bringing a buddy along. Katsuya’s namesake, Katsuya Uechi, will join Mina in the kitchen for a one-night cross-cultural dinner called “East Meets West.” We hate to start with the Iron Chef comparisons, but it’s hard when the plan over six courses involves the two chefs riffing, in their own styles, on the same ingredients. The chefs are staying secretive about the menu, which is available to diners for $90 ($135 with sake and wine), but XIV reps tell us the chosen ingredients will likely include A5 Kobe beef, Tai snapper, and blue fin tuna. Nantucket bay scallops could be paired with a passion fruit puree from Mina, whereas Katsuya would probably add kiwi slivers and yuzu vinaigrette to the critters as they get sliced raw.
