The owners of Club Sushi, named in 2002 as one of the top five state business owners by the California Business Advisory Council, turned themselves in last week to plead “not guilty” to charges of forgery and grand theft. Gregory and Melissa Alan have not been formally booked or fingerprinted, reports Daily Breeze, but were released on bail set at $80,000 each. Both the Hollywood and Hermosa Beach locations of Club Sushi have shuttered and the couple’s lawyer argues they are the victims of a scheme “to make the Alans look like the Bernie Madoffs of Hermosa Beach.” He claims they have done nothing illegal but “are being blamed for a bad economy,” following allegations that they ripped off investors by obtaining fraudulent loans and credit. The Alans were featured in the local paper’s “Wanted” section and returned home to surrender in a Torrance courtroom. They will return to court on January 6th.
