Philippe the Original, one of L.A.’s oldest restaurants and a considerable Downtown classic that claims to have invented the French dip, has been closed by L.A. county health inspectors after cockroaches prompted customer dime-dropping. A follow-up visit confirmed the vermin were indeed infesting the restaurant (after all, who doesn’t like a French dip?), causing Philippe’s 48-hour closure. Inspectors will be back at 11 a.m. this morning to see if the creeps have been sent packing to the roach motel, making Philippe’s hopeful it will reopen for lunch. Even more disturbing is KNBC’s report that the restaurant still managed to score above a 90 with the health officials during the same visit that turned up the pests. Ai! We’d hate to find out what leads to an average score.
