Fallen Fruit, the local art collective dedicated to knocking L.A. up with fruit trees, is teaming up with LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Named EATLACMA, the collaboration will produce almost a year of exhibitions, art/food activism workshops, and various events. LACMA spokeswoman Christine Choi says plans are currently “in flux and in constant motion” as the museum attempts to keep up with Fallen Fruit’s rapidly blooming ideas. Though many of the fruits coming from this collaboration are under-wraps, we are being promised performances, multimedia exhibits, and community talks, as well as the unveiling of artist-curated gardens at LACMA’s campus.

The year-long event begins this Saturday with a fruit tree giveaway at Watts Tower Arts Center and Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center, as well as at LACMA’s Mid-Wilshire campus. Fallen Fruit is giving out 150 trees, with instructions, at each site and asking that they be planted in and around the public city spaces. LACMA says this is Fallen Fruit’s way of honoring the beginning of growth cycles as well as the partnership and their commitment to transforming the city.

The next scheduled event is on June 27th, when Fallen Fruit finish diddling with the museum’s permanent collection to assemble “The Fruit of LACMA,” featuring multi-media works that reflect the spirit of harvest and the joys of fruit. Fallen Fruit will also debut their own Show Us How You Eat project, a video co-created with the public that shows a wide swath of people eating through self-submitted videos.

The new Gardens of LACMA will be open to view during this June exhibit as well, featuring green spaces designed and curated by different artists seeking to examine public and natural space. There will also be public fruit jams, workshops, and a class that teaches salsa dancing along with salsa making. The event culminates in “Let Them Eat LACMA” on November 7th , with over 50 artists and collectives sharing their greener visions for LACMA’s grounds.
