David Myers will close Sona this May when the LaCienega restaurant’s lease is up. The visionary toque, who also owns Costa Mesa’s Pizza Ortica and West Hollywood’s Comme Ca, tells the L.A. Times that the closure has little to do with the departure of the restaurant’s management company last fall, and though the economy has been a challenge and his bakery Boule shuttered, a little time off might provide opportunities to reinvent and reinvigorate the Sona name. The Michelin-starred restaurant will be reborn in a new location in 2011, he swears. So how will Sona’s team stay busy in the meantime?

The restaurant’s chef de cuisine Kuniko Yagi and pastry chef Ramon Perez will work abroad in Asia and Europe to help conceptualize Sona’s rebirth. Perez and Yagi are also preparing dishes together at BreadBar’s Hatchi Series this month. Meanwhile, Myers will bring a restaurant with a similar feel to Sona over to Tokyo, where it will open this fall in high-end Ginza with its own gourmet pastry shop. Hopefully Sona, ahead of its time upon opening in 2002, will be reborn as promised and reveal a new vision for chef-driven global gourmet of masterful presentation. Stay tuned.
