Jonathan Gold’s Brother Goes After The Hump for Whale Crimes

Mark Gold, President of Heal the Bay and brother of L.A.’s favorite restaurant critic, admits he “got pissed” when he heard The Hump was slinging whale meat in his own back yard. Last night the activist urged Santa Monica’s City Council to revoke the restaurant’s business permit or end its lease, which the city attorney agrees to investigate. Mark and Jonathan have shared differences in the past about J. Gold eating endangered creatures, but in an op-ed on his own blog, Mark defends his family’s honor. What did he have to say?

Mark explains, “In a humorous dig at my family, Councilman McKeown also opined that ‘We need to do something before Mark’s brother…goes there and gives the joint a favorable review.’” Mark knows that’s not going to happen soon, as J. Gold shared an opinion on the restaurant with him that wasn’t found in his review of the illegal activity. Mark relates, “As a point of fact, my bro likes exotic food but he actually hates the Hump because it is “gimmicky and weird,” adding his brother’s advice that “Restaurants resort to gimmicks generally because their chefs just aren’t very good.” We’re glad to see these two finally find something to agree on.
