Provecho Closes Downtown

Gabriel Morales and Jill Bigelow’s Provecho will sadly serve Downtown no more. The modern Mexican eatery was struggling to avoid collapse after its parent company declared bankruptcy in February with debts reaching almost $2 million. A few weeks later, a judge rejected its efforts to reorganize and now, according to BlogDowntown, the doors were closed last week with nothing but a note reading, “Provecho is closed/Thank you for the support.” Morales’ year-and-a-half run was commended by J. Gold for vision, classical training, and authentic execution, but a less-than-ideal Downtown location and long, drawn-out opening possibly distracted diners from the kitchen’s momentum before their attention later collided with a disastrous economy. Let’s hope Morales’ gets another chance to cook for L.A.; there are plenty of other neighborhoods that could use a fresh take on Mex like the one he explored at Provecho.
