First Look at Sunny Blue Inc., Now Open in Santa Monica

Ever since we saw Sunny Blue under construction in early June, manager and co-owner Keiko Nakashima has had to continually tell our readers that no, she doesn't have a business on any Grub Street, but is coming to Main Street Santa Monica. Nakashima and her father have been planning their small Japanese nook for ten months and finally opened last week. Sunny Blue is in the business of yogurt and omusubi, those seaweed-wrapped rice triangles you might have nibbled at Mitsuwa. All made-to-order and locally-sourced where possible, these come in flavors like miso beef, hijiki with shitake and tofu, spicy salmon, and ume plum, all priced between $1.30 and $2.50, with even cheaper sides of edamame, daikon salad, and complimentary barley tea. Sunny Blue is also pushing organic yogurt, served in chocolate and vanilla with toppings of Pocky, chocolate-covered acai berries, and organic mochi, among the many choices. Daily specials spruce the yogurt up in indulgent recipes like caramel apple or s'mores. Overall, a fresh little bite and a quick, cheap lunch spot for the street. Check out our slide show of the space, food, and full menus and check out the shop's website for more details.
