Last Saturday, Kanoo’s Sandwiches and Cupcakes opened its doors in Culver City. The hyper-colored diner brightens even these rainy days through silly Seussian elements like a plush flower hanging as a ceiling lamp and strange, squat, Skittle-hued chairs that look like they were made from the skin of The Snorks. A glass counter balances sandwiches in an odd lineup of sizes and shapes, with options like a turkey “mole maraj” and a vegan avocado, feta and mango, among fifteen options that accompany salads, soups, smoothies, coffee creations, and exotic juices. The other signature attraction, small-batch, hyper-colored cupcakes in red velvet, coconut, and lemon cream, among the standard flavors, go for $4.50 a piece, with unlimited, add-them-yourself toppings at a sprinkle station. While one side of the dining room looks ideal for kiddies, the addition of slightly more muted, horn-shaped chairs and a film strip running along the wall provide distraction for the adults, that is, if the sight of Michael Jackson, Richard Gere, and a shirtless Bruce Lee don’t decimate your appetite. Take a look at Kanoo’s space and food in our slide show.
