Even with legal weed out of the picture, L.A. may never have looked so pie-eyed in its history. A story in yesterday's New York Times confirms that pie is sweeping the country of cupcakes (stupid cupcakes!), while another successful summer run of Evan Kleiman's pie-a-day blog, the appearance of pie-in-a-bottle from All Jarred Up, and a fever for Simple Things Sandwich and Pie Shop and the freshly baked output at FarmShop, all show the trend has landed firmly in the West. Tonight, those DIY advocates at MachineProject are doing a one-night pop-up for pie baker Sarah Williams, offering three samples of her wares (apple, lemon, and pumpkin) from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. The pie samples and entrance are free, but be warned, the make-it-yourself pie kits cost $20. So, why pie?

Well duh, didn't you just read that pie is rocking everyone's world from coast to coast? Besides that, a manager at Machine Project tells us it's a way of bringing attention to the side-business of Sarah Williams, a part-time baker who recently launched an online pie shop called Fruit and Flour. The night will also serve as a fundraiser for L.A. Regional Food Bank. Furthermore, the pop-up, titled, well, Untitled, is a continuation of the group's partnership with The Hammer Museum and LACMA, with whom they've often explored intersections between food and art. To that end, the space will be decked out by art director Julia Luke.

7:00-10:00 P.M. tonight
at Machine Project, 1200D North Alvarado. Echo Park
