They even make their own ding dongs!

Today, Nile Park and chef Nick Coe opened Black Cat Bakery in the former Fairfax home of Mani’s. In fact, people are still coming in looking for Mani’s, but instead get greeted by pastries (muffins, cookies, cake) perpetually being baked to ensure a fresh supply and an affordable selection of Californian breakfast and lunch dishes with international twists (dinner is also due eventually). In addition to gourmet coffee, country bacon, homemade sausage, cornbread, and buttermilk pancakes in the morning, there’s tortilla espanola, Italian hot sausage omelets, huevos rancheros, baklava granola, and bimibop-style farro, all priced under ten bucks. Even the brownies use Mexican chocolate and spices. For lunch, sandwiches are served with homemade pickles while all of the bread (and some of the employees) comes from Homeboy Industries, from a muffaletta to a meatball sub, BLT, and California club. Check out our slide show of the space, housed in a building that owners say is reminiscent of 1920’s New York architecture.
