Earlier today we told you that it looked like we were on the verge of a global food crisis and, right on cue, now "socialist newsweekly" The Militant reports that protests have broken out in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria about the rising prices of food staples like milk and sugar: "Algerian youth and others took to the streets demanding, 'Bring us sugar!'" And that's not all.
It sounds even worse in Tunisia, where President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali has reportedly fled the country after ongoing riots: "Youth and workers have also been protesting for weeks in neighboring Tunisia. The clashes erupted in mid-December following the death of Mohamed Bouazizi, who set himself on fire after police confiscated the fruits and vegetables he was selling without a permit. Dozens of demonstrators have been killed." Grim! We were joking when we posted this thing last week about eating bugs during the end-times, but we're starting to think we should take our own advice more seriously.
