It’s Official: Mas Malo Needs Less Noise

We totally called this one, even before it opened to Downtown a couple of weeks ago. Mas Malo is really loud! We took one look at the high ceilings and number of tables and could tell it would be an ear-shedder straight out of S. Irene Virbila’s worst nightmares. Blogdowntown gets all Mister Wizard on us for the scientific proof, using an iPhone app that reads sound decibels to determine that the new Mexican restaurant scores a 90, roughly the same level reached by a lawnmower, and enough to score them an “extremely loud” rating from San Francisco Chronicle’s reviewers. It’s also just above the level that starts damaging your eardrums with prolonged exposure. Could waiters with earplugs be in order? Maybe not, but we’d recommend a rug on the floor and possibly wrapping that beautiful bar in something soft.
