What to Eat at Maui & Sons Bar and Grill, Open Tomorrow in Hollywood

A Maui & Sons restaurant almost sounds as shallow a concept as a feature film about Facebook, but hey, the movie was pretty good and Tommy Bahama has been mixing its clothing label and restaurant chain for years, so why not? Further more, the original Maui & Sons supposedly started as a failed cookie company, so food was maybe always part of the plan. Tomorrow, Maui & Sons Bar and Grill drops in on Hollywood Blvd. to serve Hawaiian food to haoles in a partnership between the surf-wear company and Sunset Entertainment Group, which owns the contemporary edition of Pig & Whistle next door. What’s inside and what’s on the menu?

The space goes for a Tiki-vibe with accompanying giant tropical cocktails to match. It claims Hollywood’s biggest patio, surrounded by palm trees, and crowded with the usual paraphernalia like stuffed sharks and surfboards. Are such things as “huli nuli tacos,” “lava wings,” and “shaka rolls” designed for Walk-of-Fame tourists, who seemed more interested in the Hendrix impersonator outside the restaurant yesterday? Quite probably, but somehow the prices don’t appear consistent with mere cashing in, with not a single dish over ten dollars.

And while soy fried chicken, poi, Kahlua pork, and loco moco don’t make the cut, we could always use some bold new Hawaiian flavors around here and the very notion of a Spam quesadilla and a slow-cooked carnitas rice bowl sound more worth a try today than another attempt to find glory at L&L; or Ono. Plus, we already find their surf references (“The Dawn Patrol,” “The Duke”) fairly appetizing. They even take a stab at the cookie again in a humungoid macadamia nut version called The Megadamia. It all sounds pretty fun, and isn’t that what you’re seeking when haunting Hollywood Blvd. anyway?

The restaurant soft-opens tomorrow at 5:00 P.M. and officially on Monday. See the full menu below.
