Local Chef Lauded For Feeding Anaheim’s Motel Kids

Following today’s revelation that Los Angeles might be the hungriest county in the country, it’s refreshing to see Anaheim White House owner and chef Bruno Serato acknowledged for his work combating food insecurity. The Italian-born toque was featured as one of CNN’s “heroes” last night for founding Caterina’s Club, a program that, so far, has served 277,800 free dinners to children living in motels (a population documented in the Alexandra Pelosi/HBO film Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County). Serato started the program when he heard of the youths and how many of them often go without dinner, and named it for his mother who taught him how to cook and helped him prepare the program’s first 70 pasta dishes. Serato, it’s noted, feeds some of the nation’s poorest kids from one of O.C.’s nicest restaurants, and has both an inspiring tale and ambitious goal of getting restaurants and chefs around the country to participate in similar efforts. See his story in the video below.
