The gluten-free crowd has a huge new store of edible possibilities in L.A. Last Friday morning, Pam MacD’s Gluten-Free Market opened on Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank, with owner and celiac disease sufferer Pam MacDonald calling it the largest market of its kind in Southern California. Not only that, but they’re calling this one “the flagship,” and indeed the company confirms they plan to branch out to more locations in the area. So, what can you expect here?

MacD’s sells a variety of different food and cooking products, all gluten-free, including a section for fresh baked breads and pastries made by local vendors, as well as a stock that includes “pastas, sauces, breakfast bars, cereals, ice cream, cheesecake, pizza, snacks, and cupcakes.” Showing itself to be on the edge of cool cuisine in L.A., MacD’s already has sandwiches and snacks in place from Heirloom LA.

There are also stations for sampling here. The idea is to provide for those who must adhere to a gluten-free diet and, no doubt, to the recent hordes who think they do. The market is also there to inform and welcome new adherents and the curious to the fold, and also provide an alternative for families with autistic members who may be inquiring about the benefits of a gluten-free diet.

The next month will likely be a good one to get in here, as MacD’s plans to offer specials and sales in the 30 days after opening. Just tell the kids you’re going to MacD’s and see how fast they jump in the car.
