Given that our city typically constantly gets the punching bag treatment by the rest of the country, it’s no wonder that a lot of local food writing feels critically gutless and full of defensive pride, obsessed with what we cherish and not comfortable naming names when it comes to what’s weak. But hate is one of the many things we love about Midtown Lunch, which didn’t take long to fall in love with L.A., but never hesitates to tell it like it is.

Today, Zach Brooks enlightens us with his latest round of “7 Things to Hate About L.A. (Lunching That Is), taking the air out of quite a few newbies, while still celebrating L.A. food culture in the big picture. For example, while noting the lemming-like behavior of Fonuts fans, Brooks dubs L.A. “The greatest donut city in the world!” Woo-hoo!

It’s not long before bland ceviche and Texan Korean barbecue take licks of their own while Lukshon, Sotto, and Cube are praised for their edibles, though gently chided for their over $10 lunches. Check out all the gripping, griping fun yourselves!
