Last December, we learned that Laurent “LuLu” de Rouen would be helming the stoves at Larry’s, the highly anticipated newcomer on Windward Ave. near the Venice boardwalk. But that is no longer true (maybe this didn’t go over so well after all). Today we learn that Larry’s, opening in a couple weeks, is in fact a partnership between Waterloo & City’s chef Brendan Collins and Carolos Tomazos, and Hotel Erwin owners Mark and Erwin Sokol. Expect the unexpected from Collins and his small-plates menu: Things like foie gras and smoked eel terrine, brussel sprout pizza, and green gazpacho with char-grilled squid salad. There are 26 beers on tap, with a heavy craft focus, and soju, wine and Champagne cocktails. So who’s Larry?

The entire concept, including Spacecraft’s design, pays homage to local artist Larry Bell, a pioneer of California Minilamism, most known for his glass cubist sculptures in the 60s. The restaurant plans to open on August 16, but according to Thrillist, Larry’s will soft open next week, and you can try to get a reservation. The owners say they’ll expand their hours with mid-afternoon, brunch and late-night menus in the fall.
