Post & Beam (aka the homecoming of chef Govind Armstrong) is opening in December on the southern side of the Crenshaw Plaza parking lot in Baldwin Hills, part of the shopping center's $30 million renovation. The 2,500 square-foot restaurant marks a major upgrade for the mall, with an adjacent edible garden of herbs, open hearth broiler, outdoor patio, and wood-fired dishes that are sure to help Armstrong offer improved options over the popular Rally's, Downtown Buffet, and Panda Express here. What will you find Armstrong preparing at Post & Beam?

Teamed up with restaurateur Brad Johnson, Armstrong plans seasonal, shareable menu selections priced between four and twenty-six dollars, to lure in locals and faces previously unfamiliar with the neighborhood.

The chef plans to stick close to local purveyors (including the South Central Farmers Co-op) and will grow his own in a test garden for dishes like wood-fired pizzas topped with local mozzarella, freshly snipped basil, and unfiltered olive oil, small plates of turkey sausage meatballs with spicy tomato sauce, grilled octopus with green garbanzo, preserved lemon, and cracked olive, and wood oven baked mussels, as well as more sizable entrees like boneless beef short ribs and cornmeal-crusted Idaho trout. Southern-influenced sides sharing plate space with the entrees will include slow cooked greens with smoked ham hocks (also making an appearance in a red bean stew at Roy Choi's Sunny Spot), black-eyed peas, maple bacon, mashed turnips with brown butter, and charred broccolini with the chef's own garlic and chilies.

Since the locals-only approach is in motion, the drinking will be straight West Coastin' too, with beer coming from Stone, Sierra Nevada, and Eagle Rock Brewery, among others, and wines coming from the likes of ZD, Adelsheim, and Talley Vineyards.

Through with trying to please anyone on the East Coast, Armstrong is amping up his regional pride and plans Post & Beam as an honored L.A. restaurant intended for Angeleños. Stay tuned to the website, Facebook, and Twitter feed to track the project's progress.
