The rumors coming in from NorCal are true! Jeff Weinstein, founder of burger chain The Counter, is planning a new restaurant and watering hole in West L.A. with San Francisco chefs Jeremy Fox acting as a consultant and former Plum toque Charlie Parker in the kitchen as executive chef. What’s in store exactly at the new project?

Taking over the shuttered El Serape on Pico Boulevard, the space will be renamed Freddy Smalls Bar and Kitchen and could very well be a tribute to this guy**. Looking towards a December opening, Freddy Smalls will serve twelve tap beers and cocktails under the direction of former Seven Grand bartender David Fleisher.

Jeremy Fox, formerly of Ubuntu and more recently acting as a prominent pop-up king, will consult on a menu of bar dishes and small plates, with former Plum chef Charlie Parker executing, and several nightly entree specials. The project is being designed as another in our growing line of casual neighborhood taverns under talented chefs, with plans to be open Monday through Saturday and an inclination towards late-hours.

With Chris Cosentino at Downtown’s forthcoming Pigg, Parker in West L.A., Jamie Lauren in Mid-City, and Santa Monica Place packed with San Fran imports, it appears the next L.A. invasion is definitely due from the Bay Area.

**Okay, so obviously it’s not. But a rep tells us “The name comes from a piece of stained glass that says Freddy’s on it that was in the space and was the name of the place a long time ago.”
