West L.A.'s Plan Check is edging ever closer to an opening date, owner Terry Heller tells Grub Street today. The restaurant, which appears to be more ambitious (and obviously more Yankee-influenced) than most to grace Sawtelle's Little Osaka, has one more inspection to pass, while Heller plans four friends and family soft-opening parties prior to the grand-opening, which should happen "around February 20th," he says.

Until then, Plan Check (with an interior influenced by the adjacent Building
and Safety Department and Heller's own past as a developer) has a sneak preview of some of its comfort creations already posted on Facebook, serving mouthwatering, waistline-wasting dishes like the "pastrami nosh," with double-smoked, double-spiced pastrami placed on an upside-down bun balancing a fried egg, with kimchi mustard and melted cheese (check this one out and drool).

Plan Check is also on top of some enticing burgers, with one beauty bearing blue cheese and thick bacon, along with a Southern sandwich of fried Jidori and duck ham with green pimento cheese.

The sandwiches, plus dishes like a crab dip dynamite, can be followed up with desserts like this swirly banana cream cruller and may be enjoyed with craft brews, while rye cocktails are in the hands of Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni, as per Backyard Bites, and a selection of whiskeys, including picks from Japan, are offered at the bar.

So far, Plan Check sounds like a promising addition to a neighborhood that is stuffed with eating options and still growing stronger.
