Though we typically veer towards El Sazon Oaqxaqueno and Mariscos Chente come taco time in the Mar Vista area, Gallegos is a classic neighborhood standard-bearer that has stuffed 66 years under its belt. The restaurant first sprang up as a tortilla shop called Gallegos Brothers in Santa Monica and moved within that city in the eighties before finally setting up shop on Venice Blvd. in 2002. Sadly, the deli-style restaurant is closing tomorrow, as per its website.

An employee tells us the shutter comes down to those two familiar restaurant slayers “the lease” and raised rents. As the restaurant is currently sold out of its tamales, beef jerky, and chile rellenos, we’re left only with memories, which taste slightly of sweet corn. However, in a possible happy-ending, LAist tells us that team Gallegos could have another project up its sleeves, which could make itself known via Facebook in the near future.
