Planned Parenthood L.A.'s Food Fare, the city's oldest running food event, was another smashing success last night, drawing chefs and owners, imbibers and eaters, warriors of women's health rights, and yes, protestors shouldering offensive photos, to the Santa Monica Convention Center for the event's 33rd year. Maison Giraud chef Alain Giraud was by far the biggest cut-up of the day, dancing with kitchen utensils and baguettes while charming a packed crowd, thick with talent, from "chef of the year" Suzanne Goin to Food & Wine "best chef people's choice" nominee Bryant Ng and Tripel owners, Brooke Williamson and Nick Roberts. Veev continued its tasting event ubiquity with cocktails served in shakable mason jars, while Salt's Cure provided chicken liver pudding and Drago Centro scooped garganelli with fennel pollen from a monumental wheel of parmesan. Take a look at all of last night's highlights in our slide show look back at PPLA's 33rd Food Fare.
Honored as PPLA's "chef of the year" last night.
Jimmy Shaw's place offered carne desebrada, mole Poblano, and papas con rajas tacos.
Chef-owners Brooke Williamson and Nick Roberts (on the right)
Served a fantastic white bean and anchovy toast with wheat beer-braised fennel.
House-made chicken liver pudding on a bed of organic lettuce, topped with house-made pickles. Killed it!
Chef Bryant Ng
Pig tail with mint, red perilla, gem lettuce, and fish sauce. Another of the evening's most incredible dishes.
Creme fraiche panna cotta with blueberries and pistachio.
Was in great spirits, boogying with his baguettes.
Joe Miller's paella was there, rivaling Susan Feniger's Burmese salad for greatest number of local food event appearances, by our count.
The oyster magician was also back in the house.
Offered duck shawarma, a potential contender for the best thing we ever ate.
Brought tuna tartare with shiitake mushrooms and Asian pear, in addition to hickory smoked pork dumplings with barbecue beurre blanc that we couldn't get enough of.
Mar'sel at Terranea Reort
Chef Michael Fiorelli
Garganelli with pork sausage, Parmesan, and fennel pollen served from a carved wheel of Parm.
Church and State
Chef Jeremy Berlin. Chuch!
Founded by two former firefighters to help fund The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Served Patron-infused chocolate cones.
