This Saturday, Catarah Hampshire and Shoneji Robison’s Southern Girl Desserts is grand-opening a new shop at Crenshaw Plaza in Baldwin Hills. The down-home confectioner, seen on season six of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, is currently soft-serving here in a 1,200 square-foot bakery space, the second location for the business, which offers cupcakes (in flavors like Hennessy and Coke and sweet potato pie), cakes, cobblers, cookies, pudding, and pie and features an pick-up window on its exteriors for grabbing dessert orders and customized cakes.
To celebrate its grand-opening on Saturday, June 30, Hampshire and Robison are inviting the public to come party from 12:00 to 4:00 P.M. for free dessert samples, games of dominoes and spades, and a cupcake-eating contest. The event is free, while proceeds from the contest’s $20 registration fee go to youth-benefiting non-profit CLIMB Inc. Just be warned, amateur competitive eaters, Kobayashi sightings have recently been reported in the area.
