Starting tonight, Susan Feniger’s Street starts “Meatless Mondays” with a new shifting selection of vegetarian dishes, served as a supplement to her daily spread of internationally influenced recipes. The menu will change themes each week (“vegan taco night” and “Eastern European eats” are in the works) and will feature five or six vegan and vegetarian dishes, with potential recipes spanning the gamut in goat cheese fritters with an arugula strawberry salad, Hungarian mushroom goulash with hand-cut noodles, seared semolina cakes with tamarind-date chutney, and Russian pampushka with baby beet salad. The dishes are offered as both a six-course chef’s tasting menu for $35 or in three dishes for $20. All recipes can be made vegan, and lest you think meatless means meek, tonight’s menu is planned as an ode to today’s 50th anniversary of the escape from Alcatraz. Why, you ask?

Of what’s being called “The Green Mile menu,” Street chef and co-owner Kajsa Alger tells Grub Street, “I am semi-obsessed with the story of the great escape from Alcatraz and also the romantic notion that on today’s 50-year anniversary, the escapees are supposed to return to the island. It got me thinking that it would be fun to do a ‘prison break’ menu. Today also happens to be our launch of “Meatless Monday,” so we thought we’d make it green, hence ‘The Green Mile’ menu was born.”

Take a look at tonight’s full menu, “ball and chain” (spaghetti and veggie meatballs) included, down below.
