What to Eat at Casey Lane’s The Parish, Opening Friday

The Parish
The Parish

This Friday, Tasting Kitchen chef Casey Lane is opening his new Downtown restaurant, The Parish, as promised by Daily Candy. Set in a Flatiron-like corner of two painstakingly-weathered stories, Lane’s menu at this Southern-slanted British gastro-pub appears to be more eccentric than Tasting Kitchen’s straight-forward and pristine cooking. Breakfast dishes include sage egg and sausage biscuits, maple bacon beignets, and fried chicken with pickles and maple Dijon, as well as dinner items like pig’s feet poutine and oyster poutine, fish and chips, Indian daal, fried frog’s legs with butter pickles, grilled trout, corn with honeycomb butter, stout grilled sausage, pork head pot-pie, and a $17 burger with (droool!) Epoisses and pickled carrots. Lane will work his Tuscan-imported wood-fired grill to maximum effect here, with further plans to serve pastries in the A.M. in the weeks to come and eventually, lunch.

And what goes great with oyster poutine? We have no idea really, but parishoners can come by for Handsome Coffee in the morning and the cocktails of Seven Grand and Cana barman John Coltharp, including a grappa-grooving “Disco Nap,” rummy “Real McCoy,” and a “Black Bee” made with house-barrel bourbon. In addition, you’ll find wine and a serious beer program.

Lane plans to follow The Parish with Itri on Melrose, specializing in pasta in the former home of Angeli Caffe and possibly serving some of the best barbecue in the country, according to one prescient prognosticator at Food & Wine.

The restaurant is currently taking reservations for this week’s opening, with the full breakfast, beverage, and dinner menus now online.

The Parish, 840 S. Spring St. Downtown. 213-225-2400.
