In late-March, Gallego’s Mexican Deli called it quits, closing its last Westside address on Venice Blvd. in Mar Vista after a career that lasted 66 years. A staffer told Grub Street hat the closure was coming due to a skyrocketing rent, though there was some hope that los hermanos Gallegos podría volver in time. Still no word on the re-emergence of that family outfit, but today Grub Street learns that the space, raised rent and all, has been suddenly snatched up by Siam Chan, the Thai restaurant that’s housed on Colby Ave. in West L.A.

Though the Westside’s higher rents have, by and large, warded off strong Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese restaurants, Thai restaurateurs continue to have a somewhat heavy presence in the area. Siam Chan looks to be completely exorcising Gallego’s ghosts with a complete remodel and posters promising salmon panang and mummy shrimp (we’ve had repeat dalliances with its duck curry and would gladly do it again).

A manager with Siam Chan confirms this will be the restaurant’s second location and offers the optimistic outlook that the extra outpost could be open sometime next month. With neighboring Venice absolutely booming and adjacent pockets of Culver City starting to buzz with exciting restaurants, the transition to relatively quiet Mar Vista sounds like a promising move for a enterprising dining empire like Siam Chan.
