Lettuce Entertain You Planning Stella & Vine in Hollywood

L.A. already has both a Cafe Stella and a Wood & Vine, but the heavyweights at Lettuce Entertain You are planning a new Hollywood restaurant called "Stella & Vine" just to throw a spanner into the works. The Chicago-based, corporate restaurant giant, known for successful restaurants like Mon Ami Gabi and M Burger, recently celebrated Stella Rossa chef Jeff Mahin as he was named one of Forbes' "30 Under 30" this month. So far, the forthcoming restaurant is confirmed for a 2013 debut with no further details, though a repeat nod to this Stella character might possibly bode well for a new and improved pizza scene off The Walk of Fame, if related to the company's Santa Monica station.

Neighborhood Grinds Opening on Redondo Pier

Neighborhood Grinds, Fred Lies and Phil Jun's community-minded, small-batch bean roasting coffee shop on Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach, is opening an additional location next month on the Redondo Pier. The business, which is dedicated to spreading the merits of hand-brewing, milk steaming, and espresso extracting to its guests, is also an avid fund-raiser for South Bay non-profits like Madison Elementary and Environmental Charter High School through its own program called Careffeine, in which one-dollar from every bag of coffee goes to the cause of a customer's choice. Along the way, Grinds is steadily racking up accolades as one of the region's best coffee shops. An employee with the cafe foresees the opening of this second location, which will also serve solid food, in "about a month," part of the Pier's ongoing efforts to go from seedy to spiffy.

Buffalo's Cafe, a 28-year-old wings-chain with locations in Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and North Carolina, is not surprisingly trying to gain ground in less crappy states. To that end, the brand is opening its first L.A. outlet today on the corner of Sepulveda and Santa Monica, taking a corner inside of a free-standing Fatburger.

Free Sangria Today at Bar Pintxo

It was just a week ago that Zagat's blog might have ruined our thirst for sangria. Today, the site bites back with the news that Joe Miller's Bar Pintxo is celebrating its fifth birthday today by offering free sangria to its guests. Fortunately, considering the cautionary tale and all, customers are limited to one free glass. [Zagat]

Watch a Guy Make the Downton Abbey House in Gingerbread Form

A guy with a lot of time on his hands has erected a gingerbread replica of the Yorkshire country estate in Downton Abbey. The time-lapse video shows how he meticulously cuts and bakes the dough, frosts it, hooks up lighting, and, oh God, it's exhausting just typing this (does he have a day job?). The finished product is impressive — a period piece, really. Now, where's the edible Lady Mary?

What to Eat at Muddy Leek, Now Open in Culver City

Muddy Leek

Culver City's cursed corner that once housed Sublime Food Lounge and later, Batch, is now serving as Muddy Leek. Sure, it sounds sort of like a broke, B-grade blues legend or a salirophiliac's contribution to water-sports, but it's actually a restaurant (surprise, person reading a restaurant news blog!). The name is actually intended to put chef Whitney Flood and his wife, Julie Retzlaff's, made-from-scratch, super-seasonal approach front and center, rather than shout out their country collaborators, including Tutti Frutti, Weiser, Weredowski, and Windward Farms.

Just in Time for Christmas: A Bacon Yule Log Video

Applegate Farms made a video of bacon crackling over a picturesque fireplace — an emotionally manipulative, if effective, marketing move. No matter how you feel about bacon, firing up the 31-minute video on Christmas morning is a nice way to ensure everyone unwrapping presents also gets a case of the meat sweats.

Fire Shutters Du-Par's Studio City

Fire walk with mePhoto: Sam Howzit/Flickr

Last night a fire caused structural damage and the hospitalization of one employee at the Studio City location of Du-Par's, L.A.'s ancient 24-hour diner founded in The Original Farmer's Market. 51 firefighters arrived on the scene and subdued the blaze, which mainly affected an exterior storage area, though smoke sullied the kitchen and an upstairs office, while sending one employee to the hospital. The fire's start is currently under investigation and the restaurant, famous as the location where David Lynch conceived Twin Peaks, remains closed until it passes an inspection by the Health Department.
