Hot off the digital presses and available for download today is All Hands on Deck, an e-book containing 25 recipes contributed by the restaurants, bars, distilleries, and supper clubs of Red Hook, the Brooklyn neighborhood whose businesses were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The book costs $15, and all of the proceeds from sales will go directly to Restore Red Hook, a nonprofit group formed by small business owners after the storm.
Locals Zac and Cat Overman got married at Valentino Pier earlier this year and held their reception at Sunny’s on Conover Street. They were on their honeymoon when the storm reached New York. After returning and helping bail out basements and clearing debris, Zac, who is a designer and makes drinks at Fort Defiance, realized that he and Cat, an editor by profession, were in a unique position to help even more. They put the book together in a few weeks with contributions from restaurants and photographs by Vicky Wasik. Tejal Rao, the Village Voice restaurant critic who lives in Red Hook, wrote the foreword.
Recipes include lobster macaroni and cheese from the Red Hook Lobster Pound, the Good Fork’s Korean steak and eggs, El Olomega’s chicken pupusas, Kevin’s striped bass and Mediterranean salsa, Bait and Tackle’s short-rib chili, Court Street Grocers’ meatloaf sandwich, and stick-pretzel-spiked “Cowboy Cookies” from Baked. Cocktails and other drinks include hot buttered Sorel from Jack Summers, the Caribbean liqueur’s maker, and laconic instructions on how to make the whiskey and a beer back served at Sunny’s, which is more or less just wisdom disguised as a recipe.
As an incentive, anyone who purchases All Hands on Deck today will be entered in a drawing to win one of five $20 “junk bonds” issued by Fort Defiance, which’ll come in handy some cold night down the road if you’re in Red Hook and you need an Irish coffee, made with a strong brew and big shot of Powers whiskey.
