Toys For Toddies, Charlie McKenna Does Tacos, And Other Stuff That Is Happening

Stuff is happening and here is some of it: tomorrow night Heritage General Store, which is a bike shop/cafe, will join with bartenders Wade McElroy, Jeff Donahue and Greg Buttera of The Barrelhouse Flat and Infinium Spirits to host Toys For Toddies. For every toy you donate for underprivileged kids, they’ll serve you one of the holiday hot libations created for the occasion by Barrelhouse Flat mixologists. (Alternately, they ask for a $5 donation to buy more toys.) It’s from 8 to 11 p.m. tomorrow at Heritage General Store.

• Charlie McKenna of Lillie’s Q follows Bill Kim as the second chef to create a taco for charity at Antique Taco. His will feature smoked pork carnitas from Lillie’s Q with fried okra, smoked queso fresco, Lillie’s Q E.N.C. BBQ sauce, and pimiento-ghost pepper-onion-chive-orange bell pepper salsa. They’re $8 for an order of two, and $2 from each will benefit McKenna’s family charity, The Katherine McKenna Brothers Scholarship Fund, which aids female students at McKenna’s late aunt’s college, Bruneau University in Gainesville, Georgia.

• Graze, which is a sort of food magazine that also throws events, invites you to let your inner David Sedaris out at a holiday story slam on the theme of holiday dining disasters. It’s Saturday, December 15 at 8:00 p.m. at Gaslight Coffee Roasters; get more info here.

• Oy, we missed this in our piece on Jewish food above! Chicago Foodways Roundtable will have a talk Saturday by Ted Merwin, Ph.D called Pastrami on Rye: An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli. It’s at 10 a.m. at Kendall College, $3 (free to Kendall students and staff); go here to find out more.

• Sable will have a four-course Champagne & Dessert Pairing this Saturday for just $25 per person. See more here.
