Carl’s Jr. is intent on being the fast food equivalent of a restaurant like Animal, an unapologetic purveyor of “indulgent, decadent” dude food where munchies can make up the actual ingredients as much as they are embodied by the resulting recipes. On April 20 (aka “4/20, duuude”), the fast food outfit unexpectedly released a sugary new, co-branded monster meant to simultaneously challenge the Double Downs and Doritos Locos Tacos of the world. Carl’s Jr.’s new Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwich involves a scoop of strawberry ice cream placed between two Pop-Tarts, and is currently being tested at a location in Newport Beach and possibly materializing at other Southern California markets. One might question if the salad-slimmed bikini bodies of Newport are really the best demographic to try to lure into a dessert made two-thirds out of Pop-Tarts, but either way, Carl’s Jr. is making it clear that it’s not going the way of the gluten-free, steamed chicken wrap anytime soon.
