L.A.’s own Latin Grammy-nominated foursome, La Santa Cecilia, have a new video bringing attention to the plight of the undocumented. Produced by the National Day Laborer Organizing Network in conjunction with The American Business Council Foundation’s Healing Power of Music Initiative, the four and a half minute film is a loose dramatization of the band’s song El Hielo (meaning “ice” in español, as a reference to ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Using actual undocumented actors in the roles of a restaurant’s staff, the featured players start their days off at home only to be confronted by a belittling boss and government harassment with an unlikely face at work. To the light strains of bossa nova-style guitar, the song begins, “Eva shines the table, makes sure everything gleams like a pearl. Hopefully when the boss comes, she won’t complain again, and accuse her of being illegal.” Take a look at La Santa Cecilia’s full video for “El Hielo,” below.
