First Look Into Sonny’s Hideaway, Opening Soon in Highland Park

Owner Derek Lyons and chef Jimmy Everett are almost ready to debut Sonny’s Hideaway in the former home of HPK in Highland Park. Everett, a veteran of esteemed New York fine-dining destinations Marea, Eleven Madison Park, and wd-50, as well as Hong Kong’s Al Molo, will offer a modern, Mediterranean-kissed New American menu with fun, small starters like popcorn soup and falafel fries, and featuring large format entrees priced between $13 and $20, focusing on market-sourced accouterments to sustainable proteins in dishes like coffee-braised pork cheeks served with apple relish local honeycomb, chicken breast in a beer gravy with maple pecans dandelion greens, and a $14 bacon burger with pickled green tomatoes. Dishes are recognizable, though typically paired with inventive partners, marking a refreshing turn away from gimmickry. Meanwhile, J. Kelly O’Hare, of Austin’s Eastside Showroom, is heading up the craft cocktail program as bar manager.

The small dining room has a well-tailored look that lends the place a masculine hit of vintage, supper club Americana, resplendent in leather booths and hanging globe lights for a sophisticated, minimalist approach that is a fresh turn from the usual slathering of a space in antiques to endow character.
