Caitlin Freeman, the Miette Bakery co-founder and wife of Blue Bottle founder James Freeman, is also the author of Modern Art Desserts, a collection of confection recipes based on the work of artists like Warhol, Mondrian, Matisse, Maplethorpe, and that old cake-painter himself, Wayne Thiebaud. The baker will appear this Saturday at the Craft in America Study Center to sign copies of the tome as part of the museum’s “Food as Medium for Craft” series. Starting at 6:00 P.M., she’ll be offering tips on how to make the desserts at home, along with stories behind her inspiration and books for sale. And after she’s done talking, out come a few treats! Admission is free with an online RSVP, with the exhibition running through June 22.

Of course, this will not be L.A.’s first dalliance with modern art desserts, given the city’s obsession with Coolhaus, which takes its inspiration for their ice cream sandwiches from modern architects like Rem Koolhaas and Mies Van Der Rohe.
