Norm’s, L.A.’s 64-year-old diner chain, is losing a jewel in its crown. The Santa Monica link and its Googie signage are being snatched off of Lincoln after 49 years, along with a Denny’s and Antique Mart, sold by the family-owned operation to clear the way for yet more mixed-use retail and apartment development in the city—some of which is coming under fire from concerned neighbors. Though we imagine there are a few Santa Monica seniors out there who are inconsolable right now, employees of the doomed Norm’s, which will seal its doors forever on July 17, will be absorbed by one of the 24-hour restaurant’s seventeen other locations. That is, if they choose to pursue their careers in early bird specials and Lumberjack breakfasts. [SMPD via LAist]
