A Deli Employee Got Fired for Allegedly Taking Pictures of a Breastfeeding Mom

A woman’s relaxing meal with family at a San Antonio branch of the fast-casual Jason’s Deli chain quickly devolved into intense creepiness when she says she spotted an employee taking photos of her as she breastfed her 2-month-old at the table. Both Jamie Gustafson and her sister, who was also present, say they have no idea why the unidentified employee did it, but it doesn’t sound like he was at all surreptitious if that was part of the plan. Gustafson says she was “speechless” when she realized what was happening. “I got sweaty, I was so mad, but I didn’t know how to confront him. I mean, what am I going to say? ‘Give me your phone’? I wanted to take his phone and smash it.”

Gustafson’s sister confronted the employee, and the pair later went to management and ultimately filed a police report. Gustafson says she will be cautious in the future but still plans to do what is legally her right. The deli chain has been applauded by mommy bloggers for releasing a statement that reads, in part, “We cherish families and value the many wives and mothers who work here, and the wives and mothers who are our guests dining here. … We were deeply troubled by this employee’s conduct, and not only was his conduct an explicit breach of written company policy, it was a violation of the values we care about deeply.”

The employee in question, it’s no surprise to learn, has been terminated.
