Condiment War

Mortal Enemies Heinz and French’s Have Waged a Vicious Condiment War

The condiment turf war continues: Heinz has now released a mustard, and just weeks ago, French’s shocked everybody by unveiling its first ketchup. This whole Freaky Friday fridge-door situation already has them taking shots at each other, of course.

Heinz claims that its new mustard has a “superior quality” — grainier, all-natural, and made with stone-ground seeds. To advertise, there are new commercials with the tagline: “For years Heinz ketchup has been with the wrong mustard. Well, not anymore.”

Meanwhile, French’s ketchup pitch sticks to health concerns, playing up the fact that its ketchup doesn’t have high-fructose corn syrup, unlike somebody else’s. If there were ever a time for New York’s first mustard sommelier to arrive, this is probably it — before both companies get truly desperate and whip up combination bottles of “mustchup.”
