Watch Jonathon Sawyer Discuss the Appeal of Crowd-Funding a Restaurant

Over the weekend, Grub’s own Sierra Tishgart interviewed chef Jonathon Sawyer for CBS This Morning’s James Beard Award-winning segment “The Dish.” Sawyer, who has a restaurant empire in Cleveland, says he’s working to get the city “to be on the level of Portland, or Charleston, or the other Portland.” He’s not sure of his next project, but he says that he typically likes to be “counter-culture,” adding, “I like to look at where the scene is going, and either be ahead of it or be way behind it.”

For his latest restaurant, Trentina, Sawyer turned to Kickstarter to raise money — a move that’s gaining traction with more and more high-profile chefs. “It was important to make sure that we had the opportunity to embrace everybody,” he says. “I think it was very successful for us.”
