On September 10, Chez Panisse owner and influential food activist Alice Waters will be one of the ten recipients of the 2014 National Humanities Medal from President Obama. Her restaurant pioneered the produce-first, celebrate-the-seasons cooking, and the kitchen there has been home to game-changing chefs like Jeremiah Tower, Jonathan Waxman, Suzanne Goin, and Dan Barber as well as chef-writers David Lebovitz and David Tanis. Her accomplishments, though, are numerous and extend well beyond the restaurant industry, from her Edible Schoolyard program to her work with Slow Food. It’s an award that’s well deserved. You can watch the ceremony the day of through the White House’s website.
