Here’s a Food Kickstarter Worth Paying Attention To

Between a hot-sauce emporium and yet another cat café, the food-focused crowdsourcing market sure is oversaturated, but this campaign deserves support: Doria Santlofer (a former New York market editor) is raising money to finish a book that her late mother, Joy Santlofer, started writing years ago, called Food City: Four Centuries of Food Making in New York. It details the evolution of the food industry in New York, starting with Dutch settlers and spanning to the the modern-day Brooklyn craft boom.

Because Joy — who completed her MFA from NYU’s Food Studies program — died unexpectedly, Doria needs to pay an independent editor, a photo editor, and someone to compile the sources into a bibliography. (Norton & Co. has already signed on to publish the book.) As Doria writes, “She had worked steadily on the book for more than five years, though it had been her obsession and dream for at least a decade.”
